Reliable fire protection only with correct smoke detector installation
July 2024
Study shows there is a need for more information about the obligation to use smoke detectors

Despite the legal requirement for smoke detectors in all federal states, there are still significant gaps in knowledge among the German population. One in five people do not know that smoke detectors are required for private living spaces. This was the result of a recent Innofact study* commissioned by the “Smoke detectors save lives” initiative. Fire departments have been emphasizing the life-saving function of the devices for years. But in order for smoke detectors to provide a reliable alarm in the event of a fire, they must be installed in all required rooms and placed correctly.
If there are no smoke detectors or not enough smoke detectors, there is a high risk that a fire in the house or apartment will not be noticed at all or will be noticed too late. This is especially true at night because people's sense of smell is not active while they sleep.
A smoke detector belongs in these rooms
The legal minimum requirement is: one device per bedroom, children's room and hallway serving as an escape route. In Berlin and Brandenburg, installation in all lounges is also required. Regardless of legal requirements, a smoke detector should definitely be installed in the living room. Most households here contain electrical appliances, which are often the cause of house fires. Attention: Smoke detectors are not suitable for kitchens or bathrooms.
Correctly placed – for safe alert
In order for the little lifesavers to function optimally, the smoke must be able to flow into the detectors without any impairment. The location where the smoke detectors are installed has a major influence on their effectiveness. Anyone who makes mistakes here risks a delayed alarm. Alarm manufacturer Ei Electronics recommends installing smoke detectors on the ceiling in accordance with the standard, at least 50 centimeters away from walls or obstacles such as lights and furniture. Placement in the middle of the room is ideal. Places with drafts and proximity to air ducts should be avoided. It is advisable to always mount the devices with dowels and screws to ensure permanent attachment to the ceiling. Adhesive connections can loosen over time.
